SEVIER COUNTY SHERIFFS

The sheriff is the county's chief peace officer and the executive officer of the courts. The office dates from 1794.

The first sheriff, Thomas Buckingham, was appointed by Governor Blount of the Territory South of the River Ohio Under the first constitution in 1796 the sheriff was appointed by the County Quarterly Court. Since 1836 the sheriff has been elected by popular vote.
